Buddy, in light of the warez link i was thinking. Maybe you could make a file that does a check to ensure none of your files have been tampered with and that it is a clean set of files like is done with vbulletin nulled versions. Might be a bit of work though.

There is Nothing like a 'call home' but enough to see who takes off the footer text and passes it off as their own.

I am not too fussed about warez, if something is on the net, it will be shared on there! And obviously the package isn't chargable so I am not losing anything.
